Prolific shop thief jailed after admitting 10 thefts and assault

A man has been jailed for 32 weeks after pleading guilty to shop thefts across Skegness and Nottingham, one count of assault by beating, and having a suspended sentence activated for breaching licence conditions.

Jake Sykes, 33, of Linley Court, Bingham, Nottinghamshire appeared before Lincoln Magistrates’ Court on 13 July having pleaded guilty to 10 counts of shop theft and one count of assault by beating for which he was sentenced to 24 weeks in prison (to run consecutively) and ordered to pay £100 compensation. He also had a suspended sentence activated for which he was sentenced to eight weeks in prison (to run concurrently):

The officer in charge of this case, Community Beat Manager, PC Lucy Hawley said: "Ultimately, tackling shop theft is about far more than simply enforcing the law. It is about protecting people, supporting local businesses, and helping to ensure our town centres remain safe, welcoming and thriving places for everyone.

"Shop theft is also frequently linked to broader criminality, including substance misuse, drug-related activity and other issues that negatively impact our communities. By targeting those responsible for the greatest levels of offending, we aim to reduce crime, protect businesses, support victims, link offenders into appropriate support systems, and make our neighbourhoods safer for everyone.”
